KOCHI: The rising number of chain snatching incidents has put the city police in a fix as they are not able to evolve a measure to check the crime and identify the criminals. The police officials maintain that though they are doing their best to nab the culprits who are targeting lone woman pedestrians in the city, it is up to each individual to be vigilant against them. Kochi City Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) P A Valsan said that they have started to collect details of certain suspects in the backdrop of increasing chain snatching incidents in the city. “Most of the suspects are from districts like Kottayam, Thrissur and Alappuzha. We have traced the registration number of a few motorcycles used by the chain snatchers and alerted the respective police officials,” he said. The official said that the public must cooperate with the police to nab the criminals. “Avoid wearing gold ornaments while commuting alone. Cover your neck with a sari or shawl. Always be alert and watchful of motorbikes coming from behind,” the DCP said. Meanwhile, Ernakulam District Residents Association Apex Council (EDRAAC) has decided to alert the residents.“We have send circulars to all the residents associations with the dos and don’ts to be followed while travelling alone,” EDRAAC president Rangadasa Prabhu said. “Since women are being targeted we are working to create awareness among them,” he said.“Though we have launched night patrol in many areas the effort is not enough to tackle thefts as criminals have started to conduct daylight robbery,” he said.
