CHENAI: V Venkatraman, chosen as The Weekend Leader Person of the Year, 2011 was recently awarded at a function in VIT. GV Selvam, Vice President, VIT Chennai, presented the award to the 49-year old Venkatraman, for his ‘One Rupee Lunch’ for the poor at his restaurant in Erode. The Weekend Leader (www.theweekendleader.com), a website that carries news stories about unsung heroes, change agents, and innovators, organised the event jointly with VIT Business School, Chennai. A panel discussion was held on the occasion. It had five VIT students sharing their thoughts on ‘Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives’ along with two experts from the social sector, AJ Hariharan and Marie Banu. PC Vinoj Kumar, Editor, The Weekend Leader, urged the students to have people like Venkatraman as their role model and aspire to become social entrepreneurs. Senior journalist Sam Rajappa, Consulting Editor of The Weekend Leader, gave away mementoes to the organisers.
