Sonia says UP doesn't trust Mulayam
Congress chief says state's people believe free and fair assembly elections are not possible under Mulayam.

New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday said that people of Uttar Pradesh believe free and fair assembly elections are not possible under Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

"You have to just take a short trip to UP and ask that question to the people. The answer that you will get from the people will be 'no'," she said in reply to a question after her address at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit.

Gandhi's statement are important, as it comes during growing demands for imposing President's rule in the state. Mulayam’s critics blame Samajwadi Party workers for the violence during the recent local body elections.

Gandhi ducked a specific question on whether she too felt like the people of Uttar Pradesh. "You being a journalist; you will be probably more informed than I am," said Gandhi, who is also the UPA chairperson.

She preceded her remark saying "our experience in UP at the time of elections, including the latest phase of local elections, has not been a happy one."

Disagreeing with the questioner that the Congress would fare badly in the politically crucial state, Gandhi said her party may "give some surprises."

"We have picked up quite a bit. It is a good sign for us and we might well give some surprises," she said adding that the party had not fared "that badly" in the local body polls.
