KOCHI: It is time to remember the love and affection showered by the late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on children. Children’s Day is being celebrated with much fanfare in city schools on Monday. All the schools have organised special programmes for students, especially in the lower and upper primary sections. Uniforms are not a must and classes are not regular and that itself calls for festivity and gaiety. We are just looking forward to the day, said a few students. Different colours, contests and sweet distribution mark the day.The district administration has organised a Children’s Day programme for around 50 government and aided schools coming under the Kochi Corporation. Contests in patriotic songs, mono-act, fancy dress and light music were held as part of the programme.The winners of the contests and other students will take out a rally on Monday afternoon. The rally will commence from the Rajendra Maidan at 3 pm and conclude at the Subhash Park by 5 pm. More than 5,000 students will take part in the rally. Floats and a band are the highlights of the rally, said AEO R Sreekala. Sandra Martin of St Teresa’s GUP, who was placed first in the elocution contest will dress as Chacha Nehru and lead the rally, she said.Godson of St Joseph’s School will give the welcome speech for the ceremony to be held at Subhash Park. Tesha of St Jude’s School, Karanakodam, will propose the vote of thanks. Prizes will be distributed to the winners of all the contests at the function. The rally will break after students partake of the feast, said the AEO. Besides, each school is hosting a range of programmes to make the day memorable. The Edappally UP School is all set for Children’s Day celebrations. Elocution contest will be held and children will be publishing a children’s magazine as part of the celebrations. The Inner Wheel and Rotary are sponsoring prizes which will be distributed during an informal meet. Of course, sweets will also be distributed,” said Mathew Cherian, Principal of the school.“Games, music and contests have been charted out. Teachers will conduct programmes for students. It will be rounded of with cake distribution,” said Maya Mohan, Principal, Chinmaya Vidyalaya.
