Buses ferrying school and college kids would now be fitted with speed governors to ensure children’s safety, revealed Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Bairon Singh Gurjar here on Tuesday. The traffic police have already written to the Transport Department in this regard which in turn has initiated measures to get the government nod, he added.
Gurjar was addressing the heads of various private and government educational institutions at a meeting on the safety of the school children. At the meeting, many headmasters and principals complained of the sexual harassment faced by girls in overcrowded buses. They suggested the introduction of ‘girls only’ buses. Addressing this concern, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) N T Sivadasan informed the gathering that student special buses will now have partitions for girls and boys. Regional Transport Officer Raghunathan said the Traffic Department would pursue the matter with the government. A valid photo-identity card would also be made mandatory to deter outsiders from boarding the buses.
Sivadasan turned down a suggestion to post a policeman outside each school at the start of the day citing shortage of personnel. Instead, he advised the schools to enlist the help of NCC and NSS volunteers.
Sivadasan also suggested formation of a committee in each school representational of both school authorities and parents to inspect the vehicles every month. He added that suggestion boxes would be placed in schools for parents and students to communicate with the traffic police.
The SP also informed the gathering that school buses would not be allowed on the following routes unless the school is in the vicinity of the area: Anna Salai between Vallalar Salai and Odiansalai Junction, Kamaraj Salai between Raja Theatre and Vallalar Salai Junction, Lenin Street, Bussy Street between Odiansalai and H M Kasim Salai Junction.
