Sri Lanka accuses IMF of politicising financial aid
There has been a delay in the bailout of funds worth $1.9 billion from IMF.

New Delhi: Sri lanka has accused the International Monetary Funds (IMF) of politicising financial aid after a delay in the bailout of funds worth $1.9 billion from the funding agency.

Lankan Trade Minister G L Peiris has accused the IMF of taking political factors into account while considering funds for a war-ravaged economy.

Lankans are upset that the funds committed by the IMF in the month of April are still pending.

Reports suggest that the loan has been put off due to political pressure from the US, UK and other western nations over Colombo's handling of the final stages of the lankan army offensive against the LTTE that resulted in the killings of thousands of civilians.

Sri Lanka tapped the IMF for aid in March in a bid to stave off its first balance of payment deficit in four years after the island's foreign currency reserves fell to around six weeks' worth of imports.
