THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A child’s mind is the most difficult book to read, any teacher would agree. This is the reason why the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), which has the onus of bettering elementary education in the state, has been giving thrust to child psychology in its teachers’ training modules. Now, the SSA is all set to impart training in child psychology to madrassa teachers in the state.Malappuram would pilot the training project, which was envisaged by the SSA in its March 2011-12 budget and approved by the Ministry for Human Resource Development (MHRD), to be implemented this year. An introductory meeting to the concept, which was held in Malappuram last week, in the presence of various Muslim religious outfits evoked positive response from all. A meeting to chart out the ‘need analysis’ of the madrassa faculties - as to what kind of training they require- would be held in the second week of October. “It is not any kind of intervention into the curriculum or academic affairs of the madrassas. What we intend to do with the training is to empower them to know the child sitting before them. After all, every kind of education should improve the child and the teacher should be able to identify the mental requirements of his wards,” Abdullah Parapurathu, State Programme Officer of the SSA, said. Two years before, the district panchayat in Malappuram had tried out a similar training programme for madrassa faculties. It had gained very positive response too giving more hope to the SSA. The piloting experience in Malappuram would decide its extension to other districts which is being planned this year itself. “A Muslim student often begins his day in the madrassa class rather than in a regular school. After the class, he runs to his classroom in the regular school, which means the student goes through two kinds of educational atmosphere in a matter of hours. The training is intended to synchronise the two teaching methods and to reduce the jerk the student might feel when shifted from one place to another,” an official said. Initially, around 10 madrassa teachers would be called to the ‘need analysis’ seminar. Once the module is prepared, a handful of madrassa teachers would be given training, who would don the role of Resource Persons (RP) and impart the training to more teachers. “With child psychology gaining prime importance in pedagogy, SSA’s project is in tune with the need of the hour,” officials said.
