Support from associations for Russell traders

BANGALORE: Russell Market traders received a shot in the arm as a number of associations in Cantonment area have extended their solidarity to the issue of retaining the historic Russell Market. They have asked the BBMP to clear garbage, supply water and construct more toilets for the public instead of pressurising traders to agree for the demolition. The development comes in the wake of BBMP’s reported proposal to demolish the market building and reconstruct a new one.The office-bearers of the Stephen’s Square Gujri Association said the traders at the Cantonment area knew   ‘more than the BBMP officials’ know about the buildings and warned that they would  not allow anyone to demolish the structure. “Our parents used to bring us here when we were kids. We want to pass on the same picture to our grand children. Nearly 30 other associations have assured support for us while having talks with the state government on this issue,”  said Mohammed Sarder, president of  Stephen’s Square Gujri Association.Echoing similar views, Cantonment Mutton Merchants’ Association president Moin Qureshi said, “We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Russell Market traders. In the 480-odd shops at the market, 129 shops are occupied by mutton merchants. It will be difficult to do business outside the market, if BBMP decides to demolish the market. Moreover, the government certified construction firm was involved in the renovation process. So it is advisable for BBMP to provide additional facilities in the market.” Members of Russell Market Traders’ Association are elated. “The association now has become more strong with the support from other traders. We will hold talks with BBMP but will not allow demolition,” Idrees  Choudhry, general secretary of the association said.
