Chennai: Coastal areas of northern Tamil Nadu are set for a heavy spell as the low pressure over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm.The cyclonic formation named 'Thane' is expected to cross the coast between Cuddalore and Nellore by the morning of December 30, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

"The system is moving in a westward direction. It is moving along the path that has been predicted by the models," said SR Ramanan, director of Regional Meteorological Centre.

"The storm may be expected to hit northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh," he added.

At the time of this report, the eye of the cyclonic storm was identified 650 km East South East (ESE) of Chennai, and was reported to be moving ESE, along the path mapped by the models.

A 'distance warning' signal has been hoisted at the Cuddalore port, where the wind speed is expected to hit 45-55 kmph on December 29.

The Pamban port authority hoisted a second cyclone warning flag. Met sources said that winds would blow at a speed of 50 to 55 km/hr in Palk Bay and the sea would be rough in Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay on Wednesday. Meanwhile, in Nagapattinam, signal flag number II was hoisted at the port.

Almost all parts of Andaman and Nicobar  have been experiencing heavy rain and strong winds.

"All the inter-island sailing have been cancelled considering cyclonic weather and local cautionary warning sign number III has been hoisted in all the ports," sources in  Andaman’s shipping department said.

The district administration in Puducherry has issued a level-two warning at the Thengaitittu harbour.
