BANGALORE: Month:11. Date:11. Year:2011. Couples, who became parents on Friday, were jubilant as the birth of their child was considered auspicious by many astrologers. It might be true, for their children were catapulted into instant fame by extensive media coverage. The fallout of such cosmic alignment of numbers was that city-based obstetricians were busy and in their surgical theatres throughout Friday with Bangalore reporting nearly 100 deliveries.
It was a dream come true for Pundalik M Chandarg and his thirty-two-year old wife Vijayalakshmi, when the digital clock in the waiting room outside the operation theatre recorded the time of birth as 11.11.11. Interestingly, they were blessed with twins — a boy and a girl — during the 11th year of marriage.
“It has become the most memorable day of my life. Unfortunately, my wife was suffering from tuberculosis for many years and consequently she was unable to conceive. There were many other complications too. However, we were relieved when our astrologer predicted that she will be able to deliver on 11th of the 11 month in the 11 year of our marriage. Every parent wants his or her baby to prosper and we believe that the date of birth has a role to play in their life. Our happiness cannot be expressed in words,” said Pundalik.
Though many deliveries were naturally predicted for November 11, the doctors did not disappoint couples who wanted this date for their child. They arranged for deliveries through cesarean sections for those who completed the stipulated weeks of their pregnancy.
In some cases, it was a lucky coincidence. Like the case of Munirathnama (24), who was admitted to a hospital on November 9 but was blessed with a baby on 11/11/11 at 11 am at MVJ hospital at Hoskote. Similarly another lady Latha was also believed to have delivered at 11 am at KC General Hospital which reported 50 deliveries.
However the hype does not affect 30-year-old Ashwini, who delivered her first baby girl on 11/11/11 at 8.45 am, nearly a month in advance. “I am just delighted that she was born early,” she said.
Dr Siri Raju, consultant, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, BGS Global Hospital, which witnessed three deliveries on Friday said that two deliveries were “post-dated” and one was “pre-dated”. “The mother preferred to deliver as per their astrologer's advice," he said.
