This inevitable question has been put to me so many times since I let people know I was working in a news channel. When I tell them that I am at the assignment desk which is a very important function in co-ordination and management of a news channel the 'oh I see' look says it all. One wonders then about the conventional way people think about how this industry of images and sounds works.

Many don't know and realize the kind of work and effort which is put in by people who are not visible to the rest of the world. Now this is not about self appreciation or boasting of how great the rest of us are. But certainly its about the fallacy of human nature and numbed sense of an existence in a small manually created world. It comprises people from different backgrounds brought together to create an environment so the audience's thinking can be impressed and influenced in the most effective manner.

There are many stories which remain untold. The hidden confession of editors about how people sideline them once the story is edited. The driver's complaints on his lack of sleep due to continuous night shifts. The way a guard is scared while opening the door to the bosses. The engineer's continuous fight to get the link right and shouting to the OB guy to give a link in time or how he'll lose his job. The effort of the ingest to continuously intake six feeds while ensuring good audio when a breaking news situation happens. The cameraman's anger on how he's wasting his life while waiting for someone to give a live link once an hour from the rooftop. The desk's clenched teeth when a planned rundown cannot be played because some fool decided to burst a few bombs and kill people. The newspaper guy who is shocked when rudely called 'newspaper' and asked to get one. The library team expresses frustration at not finding adapters when they haven't been returned. The research efforts on finding the right statistics to put in graphics. The MCR's amazing concentration in putting the advertisement just at the right time. The guest co-ordination's despair when a neta throws tantrums.

There are innumerable other things which might escape attention and not be noticed . Yet the effect they have on my realization of the ways of this world never ceases to amaze me. The outside world and the inner cocoon have the same dynamic structures, just the magnitude differs. Inequalities and insensitivities exist in a manner ,which is bound to be in a chosen world of capitalism. The reality which hits you when you realize that people on the other side of camera are victims of the same entrapment of images they wish to expose to the public watching them brings the thought to a full circle.

The question of where we are headed to then does make me wonder if these people will ever throw up their hands and shout to let that creepy feeling of inconsequence and muted existence out of their systems. Or will they continue to do their jobs with motivation of the next increase in paycheck and a few smiles and jokes here and there or a salvation will present itself in a form which will give them nirvana. Why breaking into a song and dance is called unprofessional yet chin up and do your job expression is considered professionalism. Surprising or is it then that when the guard at night says very humanely 'Good Night Sir' because probably he has been taught to or he just felt like saying it, it brings a half muted reply from my side and gives me a reason to thank and feel guilty as to how cold I have become.
