New Delhi: There was a huge buzz around the stripped-down version of iPhone, named iPhone 5c, but the excitement seems to have dropped off after Apple announced the pricing details of the unlocked versions of the so-called cheaper iPhone 5c.
Apple was expected to price the iPhone 5c competitively to gain ground it is losing to Samsung and other manufacturers using Google's Android to power their smartphones in emerging markets, and thus the new stratgey could backfire Apple.
The 16GB unlocked iPhone 5c is priced at $549, while the 32GB model costs $649. On directly converting these price points to INR (with $1 = Rs 64), the cost of the 16GB and 32GB models come to Rs 35,136 and Rs 41536.00, respectively, not considering duties and taxes.
But this does not necessarily translate into the actual prices that the device(s) will launch in India because as past instances show, India prices are not a direct currency conversion away and there are many other factors at play in deciding the prices for different markets.
While we are yet to hear prices of the iPhone 5c for the Indian market, but the direct currency conversion hints that the newly introduced iPhone 5c may come to India at a price above Rs 35K. It is totally Apple's discretion that what all factors it takes into account while determining the prices for the Indian market. The iPhone 5c will come to India before the end of December.
But considering the prices at which Apple has launched the new iPhone 5c, it is likely that Apple will still lose out its market share to its old rivals like Samsung.
