Borrowing from minister Danam Nagender’s book of tactics, two dozen corporators belonging to the TDP locked up the head office of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) at Tank Bund to protest the condition of roads in the city on Monday.
GHMC staff had difficulty getting to their desks as the TDP corporators led by Singireddy Srinivas Reddy and K Rama Rao locked both entrance gates of the GHMC HQ, one leading to the mayor’s office and the other to the commissioner’s. The lockdown went on from 9.45 am to 12.15 pm.
The TDP corporators said they wanted to draw mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain and GHMC commissioner M T Krishna Babu’s attention to the monsoon-battered roads all over the city.
GHMC officials alerted the police about the sit-in and posses were rushed in to remove the picketers. But the corporators locked themselves in and ignored all pleas by GHMC additional commissioner (planning) K Dhanunjaya Reddy, including a rather desperate suggestion that that kind of protest would give the wrong idea to other political parties.
Singireddy said they would open the locks only if the mayor and commissioner met them to discuss civic problems. Dhanunjaya Reddy called up the mayor and informed him about the situation and the latter agreed to meet them. The locks were then opened.
Mayor Majid Hussain did meet the agitating corporators and promised that GHMC would take up road repairs immediately.
