THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sports and Cinema Minister KB Ganesh Kumar on Thursday said that the film industry can no longer sustain based on the revenue from satellite, video and audio rights. He was speaking at the ceremony organised here to flag off the campaign of Theatre Classification Committee which is entrusted with the responsibility of grading the theatres in the state.The minister said that there was fierce competition among television channels in acquiring the satellite rights of new movies. They were ready to shell out huge sums for this. But of late they have purposefully taken a stand in toning down the competition by bidding for low prices. This has brought the film producers and distributors at the mercy of the viewers to realise the money that went into the production. Hence it has become necessary that the theatre owners provide premium facilities which will attract the viewers to the theatres.He also said that the State Government would proceed with its decision to realise wide release of films in spite of stiff opposition from various theatre owners. Besides single screen theatres, multiplexes will also be brought under the grading system devised by the government, the Minister added.The government has given shape to three Theatre Classification Committees for each regional zones namely Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode, the functions of which were flagged off on Thursday. The committees will inspect the theatres and submit the report within a month. Grades will be assigned to the theatres accordingly.Thiruvananthapuram regional committee comprises Ramachandrababu (cinematographer), Krishnanunni (sound engineer), B Muraleedharan (civil engineer), Javed Parvesh (reporter) and P R Hariharan Nair (film enthusiast).
