VILLUPURAM: Thirukovilur rape victims were given compensation of Rs 5 lakh each by the school education minister C Ve Shanmugam on Sunday. Following the allegation of rape by policemen, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced solatium for the four Irula girls last week.The school education minister Minister handed over cheques to the girls and told them that the Chief Minister was always ready to extend a helping hand to them. The Minister told the girls that they could express their grievances freely if any.After receiving the cheques, the girls expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for the help.The girls told the Minister that they do not have ration cards in order to start bank accounts. The Minister instructed the district collector C T Manimekalai to take required action immediately for the issuance of ration cards to them so that they could open bank accounts and deposit the cheques.In addition to that, Rs 2 lakh solatium was also given to family members of Rajalingam and Paramasivam, who died in rain-related incidents.Case against KalyaniThe Thirukovilur police had registered a case against Professor Kalyani and Ramesh of Pazangudi Irular Pathugappu Sangam, following a complaint that was filed by Thangamani, president of Pazangudi Makkal Viduthalai Katchi.After a two-day medical check-up at Mundiyampakkam Medical College and Hospital, the girls were produced before Thirukovilur judicial magistrate on November 30.While they were leaving the court premises, Thangamani reportedly asked to the girls to go with him saying he would shelter the victims. However, the girls refused to go with him.This developed into a dispute between the members of two organisations after which, DSP Paneer Selvam asked the girls for their opinion in the matter. They expressed their willingness to go with Kalyani and Ramesh.Meanwhile, Thangamani lodged a complaint with Villupuram SP Baskaran on Saturday saying that he had been threatened by the Kalyani and Ramesh.Following this, superintendent of police Baskaran ordered Thirukovilur police to take action on the complaint and a case was registered against Kalyani and Ramesh under sections 294 B, 323 and 506 (2) of IPC and section 3 (1) (X) of SC/ST Act.It is noteworthy that only Kalyani of Pazangudi Irular Pathugappu Sangam took the girls’ rape issue to the police in the beginning.
