Chennai: The father-in-law of the Dalit man who was hacked to death for allegedly marrying an upper caste girl near Coimbatore has surrendered. The 21-year-old engineering student Sankar was killed in a case of suspected honour killing allegedly on the orders of his wife's family who hails from the upper caste Thevar community in Tamil Nadu.
The killing has been caught on CCTV. A post mortem is being conducted on the victim's body.
"Her family has been threatening them all these days. A few months ago they sent people to chase them down but they managed to escape. This time they have hacked them," said Velusamy, the father of the man killed.
The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has also stepped in and has sought a report from the Tamil Nadu government on the killing. "It is a shocking incident. We have sought answers from Tamil Nadu government. We have seen that there has been many cases of Dalit atrocities in Tamil Nadu. I will personally visit Tamil Nadu. There needs to be sensitivity regarding security of Dalits," Punia said.
Meanwhile, political parties have started bickering over the gruesome honour killing near Coimbatore. DMK leaders have attacked the AIADMK government of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and accused the police of being insensitive towards Dalit issues. "This is going in Tamil Nadu for sometime. The AIADMK government's police isn't sensitive to such issues. There should be policemen going around. How did this happen when everyone is watching and no one stopped the culprits. The footage shows the culprits. The police should arrest the culprits. Police are inactive. This is an uncivilised act," said DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan.
Sankar was attacked with knives on a road on the outskirts of Coimbatore when he was with his wife. Sankar died on the way to the hospital, while his wife has been admitted with injuries.
