The new parking arrangements at Nehru and Kosakadai streets have come under sharp criticism from shopkeepers and small vendors, who complain of loss in business and demand that the old parking system be restored.
The Chamber de Commerce too has opposed the new system.
At a meeting organised by the traffic police, following complaints and protests on Thursday, all traders from Nehru Street turned up in large numbers.
The meeting, chaired by MLA and government whip G Nehru, decided to form a panel to look into the complaints and suggestions.
A 10-member committee would be formed on Saturday and the suggestions regarding parking on both the key streets would be discussed by the members.
Pointing out that business was affected after the new traffic arrangements made after the two-wheeler parking was set up at the old jail premises a couple of days ago, the traders urged the traffic police and municipality to revert to the old system.
They claimed that a majority of customers arrived at Nehru Street on two-wheelers.
Shembakarajan, president of the Chamber de Commerce and others, suggested that the two-wheeler parking should be allowed on the street as customers found it difficult to park their vehicles at a distance and walk for shopping.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Bairon Singh Gurjar said the traders could submit their suggestions in writing so that the committee could look into it.
Superintendent of Police (Traffic) N T Sivadasan said the panel would meet on Saturday and Sunday, and a decision would be taken by Monday. At prsent, two-wheelers are not being allowed at Nehru and Kosakadai streets. Only four-wheelers are being allowed to be parked along the stretch.
