A 33-year-old travel company owner was arrested for allegedly cheating a woman engineer after promising to marry her, at Anna Nagar on Saturday.
It was a friendship that began through Facebook. Robert, a resident of Anna Nagar, came into contact with 24-year-old Jaya (name changed) via the social networking site in November last, sources said. Jaya, an engineer and native of Sriperumbudur, worked in a private company in Vadapalani and stayed in a hostel. Robert was a BBA graduate.
Jaya often dropped in at Robert’s company and the two soon became intimate after the travel company owner promised to marry her. Jaya became pregnant, but was forced to undergo an abortion by Robert. He threatened her and took her to a hospital in Kodambakkam, where she underwent the abortion. “When Jaya’s mother and brother, who worked as engineer in Bangalore, confronted him, he agreed to marry her, but soon backtracked. He began to spread canards that Jaya was blackmailing him for money,” the sources said.
Meanwhile, Jaya also learnt that Robert had befriended a college girl and tried to warn her, but she refused to pay heed. Finally, Jaya met the police commissioner and submitted a petition, demanding action against Robert, on Saturday. The complaint was directed to the all-woman police station in Anna Nagar. An FIR was registered against Robert, who was later arrested and booked on charges of cheating on promise of marriage. During investigation, police saw that Jaya’s name had been entered as ‘wife of Robert’ in the ledger of the hospital where she underwent abortion. They also learnt that Robert had cheated two other women in a similar manner. Robert has been lodged at the central prison in Puzhal.
