CHENNAI: The simple glories of the outdoors and the various issues concerning nature and human interactions with it were at the core of this year’s instalment of ‘Trek Polamaa’, the annual series of workshops and lectures of the Chennai Trekking Club. Speakers at the event shared their knowledge, expertise and experiences on various aspects of outdoor activities and natural conservation with the gathering.The annual event has been growing in popularity in reflection of the enormous growth of the non-profit, voluntary Chennai Trekking Club. The club has reportedly attracted over 14,000 enthusiasts in the four years of its existence. Around 150 trekking, cycling, mountain biking, wildlife and nature conservation enthusiasts listened to speakers despite the oppressive humidity of the non-air conditioned hall.Speakers, on their part, regaled the audience with their experiences with outdoor activities. One, for instance, spoke about paddle boarding, and how it could allow visitors to shallow marshes in an eco-friendly fashion and observe the animal and plant life without disturbing the serenity of the surroundings. The pictures and videos he showed were meet with ooohs and aaahs by the enthusiastic audience.The line-up of speakers at the two-day workshop was wide-ranging, from amateur trekkers to those with impressive credos. Blue Cross India GM Chandru, Ravichandra, Youth Hostels Association of India chairman Venkatnarayanan and Croc Bank director Colin apart from photographers, doctors, wildlife conservationists made up the list.With the Chennai Trekking Club continuing its growth story, more 'Trek Polamaas' seem in order.
