Two Coaches of Guwahati-bound Capital Express Derail in West Bengal
The engine and two coaches of Guwahati-bound Capital Express derailed in Alipurduar district on Assam-West Bengal border on Tuesday night.

New Delhi: Close on the heels of the horrific train accident in Kanpur on the 20th of November which claimed 146 lives, news of another accident caused by train derailment came in from West Bengal less than a month later claiming 2 lives.

The 13248 Capital Express travelling from Rajendra Nagar in Patna to Guwahati derailed around 9:15pm on Tuesday night near Shamuktala junction, which connects the districts of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar and is close to the West Bengal-Assam border.

Two coaches of the train and the engine derailed, one being an SLR coach and the other a general second class coach.

Rescue operations began after The NorthEast Frontier Railway pressed into action an accident relief train which reached the spot around 10:00pm along with doctors and relief material.

The Divisional Railway Manager Alipurduar, Sanjeev Kishore was at the spot supervising the rescue operations.

The prima facie cause of the derailment points to overshooting of the signal by the driver.

A probe has been ordered by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu to ascertain what led to the driver overshooting the signal.

The ill fated train Capital Express had arrived at Shamuktala junction around 9:05pm and was put on line number four to give way to the 12424 Radhjhani Express travelling from New Delhi to Dibrugarh.

A major accident was averted, but the damage was done with two persons losing their lives due to the driver of Capital Express overshooting the red signal.
