CHENNAI: Two contract labourers of Chennai Corporation died after allegedly inhaling poisonous fumes in a sewage tank at Thiruvottiyur on Sunday. Sources said that Moses (32) and Anand (36) were contract sanitary workers attached to Thiruvottiyur division of Chennai Corporation. Besides regular duty, they took up private work during holidays. On Sunday, they were engaged by a private company located on Poongavanam Street to clean a tank. Little after stepping into the tank, they fell unconscious. On information, fire and rescue services personnel pulled them out, but they were dead. They are suspected to have died after inhaling poisonous fumes released from the tank. LIC agent R Jayakumar, a resident of Thirunagar in the area, alleged that waste released by the company polluted the entire area. Brown Sugar Worth `60 Lakh SeizedFour persons were arrested and 600 grams of brown sugar worth around Rs 60 lakh was seized from them at Egmore on Sunday.Police said a special team rushed to Ethiraj College-Victoria Crescent Road junction on information that a  gang was in posession of a large quantity of brown sugar. The team rounded up Tamil Selvan (23) of Red Hills, M Rafiq (20) of Kodambakkam, S Selvan (30) of T Nagar and V Dilip Kumar (20), of Vadapalani. A search of them yielded 600 grams of brown sugar, a police statement said.  On questioning, the four men said that they purchased the narcotic substance from one Raj Kumar in Red Hills. They were produced before a court, which remanded them to judicial custody.
