Lucknow: A 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur after she was kidnapped and gangraped by two men.
The accused allegedly held a grudge against the victim's mother who defeated the two men in a recent panchayat election. The victim's family has also claimed that the police refused to register a case.
An FIR was lodged only after the girl committed suicide. Both the accused have been arrested.
Superintendent of Police Arvind Singh said, "We have detained both the persons they have named. Postmortem is being done and a doctor panel will tell us what has happened. After all the reports are in we will take action based on that."
Lashing out at the state government for crime against women, former Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Barkha Shukla said, "The law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh is very saddening. If such incidents will happen with women, the faith of people will get over from the government."
Backing Barkha, activist Kavita Srivastava said "The Uttar Pradesh government still hasn't realised how bad the situation is there in the state. If the daughter of people's representative is not safe, then who will feel safe in that place."
