"We have also advised our supervisors to be flexible regarding transportation-induced delays," the embassy said in a statement.

New Delhi: The embassy of the Unites States of America has backed the Delhi government's odd and even number car formula. They have said that they will comply with the government's ruling. American employees have been encouraged to cooperate with the scheme. Diplomats have said that they will carpool or travel by public transport.

"For the duration of the policy, official Embassy New Delhi vehicles will comply, to the degree possible, with the odd/even restrictions. American employees are strongly encouraged to voluntarily cooperate with the odd/even policy. Many American diplomats will be carpooling or travelling by public transportation," the embassy has said.

"We have also advised our supervisors to be flexible regarding transportation-induced delays," the embassy said in a statement.

Starting January 1, 2016, the odd and even car number formula will be applied in Delhi on a trial basis for 15 days with an aim to curb pollution in the national capital. "From January 1, 2016, odd number cars will be allowed on odd dates and even number cars on even dates. The scheme will not be applicable for Sundays but on other days, it will be implemented from 8 am to 8 pm," Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said. Those violating the scheme will be fined for Rs 2,000.

Kejriwal added that his cavalcade will not be exempted from the scheme but medical emergency will not come under its purview. Single women drivers have been exempted from this scheme while children up to 12 years of age can travel with a women driver.
