The Indian Vegetarian Congress, the movement of vegetarianism started by the late Rukmini Devi Arundale - also the founder of the famed dance school Kalakshetra - was re-christened on Monday as the World Veg Council (WVC).
Speaking on the occasion, Governor K Rosaiah, himself a confirmed vegetarian, said: “Vegetarianism is a way of life reflecting empathy towards fellow living creatures. Food through the animal route consumes a lot of natural resources; studies confirm that they consume more edible protein than they yield.” He noted that advancements in research and technology had enabled access to good food. The Governor also lauded the organisers for their zeal in spreading awareness on the issue and its health benefits. Earlier, international president of the WVC, Dr Tarachand Dugar, cited that verses of the Tirukkural extolled the virtues of an animal-free diet.
He dwelt at length on the achievements of the council, such as holding three international meets and its efforts in ensuring that packaged vegetarian and non- vegetarian food were indicated by green and brown dots. He reminisced his experiences with former President R Venkataraman who, he added, supported the cause to the hilt. “We are also indebted to the former Presidents S Radhakrishnan and V V Giri and former PM Morarji Desai who have backed us,” Dugar added.
“Vegetarianism is a concept that is gaining widespread acceptance of late across the world, even in regions such as the Middle-east. Since it is ethical and non-violent, it will lead us on the path of humanity,” said Ravi Kasthya, group global head of the Aditya Birla Group.
Former Puducherry Chief Minister V Vaidyalingam and former advocate general of Andhra Pradesh Harinath Gupta were among the select few to be felicitated for their contributions to the cause.
The WVC also organised an ‘Ahimsa Walk’ on the Marina on Tuesday.
