New Delhi: WhatsApp has added a new feature to its cross-platform instant messaging app that lets users know if their messages have been read by recipients, and if read, they can also see the exact time they were read.
Once a message is read, the two check marks next to it now turn blue. For any message that you send, you can now also see a Message Info screen that displays the details of when your message was delivered, read or played by the recipient(s).
To see the Message Info screen all you need to do is open a chat with a contact or a group and tap and hold on your sent message. iPhone users can simply swipe the message from right to left to see the Message Info screen.
Explaining the meaning of check marks in WhatsApp messages, the company says, tick(s) appear next to each message you send. A single grey tick means that a message has been successfully sent, double grey ticks indicate that the message has been successfully delivered to the recipient's phone, and double blue check marks confirm that the recipient has read your message.
In a group chat, the two grey check marks appear when all participants in the group have received your message. The two blue check marks appear when all participants in the group have read your message.
The introduction of this new feature defeats the purpose of the widely used 'last seen at' timestamp feature that was rolled out early this year.
