THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: On the sidelines of the Hay Festival Kerala, a writing workshop for students with Welsh author Jon Gower will take place at the Christ Nagar School on November 17. Gower, an acclaimed writer and former BBC Wales correspondent, will talk about the genesis of the novel `Uncharted.’ The workshop will focus on adaptation and writing influences - how music inspires a writer, how rivers stir the creative ideas etc. Gower will illustrate from his much-talked about travel book `An Island Called Smith’ and work with the students in coming up with ideas and word-bank to describe one or more rivers in Kerala. The students will be required to bring with them the most beautiful pieces of poetry or prose (preferably in Malayalam) which will be recorded and used in a piece for the Hay’s Jubilee. The workshop will also deal with critical writing - to create basic journalistic reports (who/what/why/when & use of reportage). High school students (plus one and plus two) who have an interest in creative writing/journalism can participate. The workshop takes place in the school from 1 pm to 4 pm.
