Watch: Young Fan Recreates Sourav Ganguly's Iconic Celebration During SA vs AUS World Cup Semi-final
A young fan replicated the famous celebration of Sourav Ganguly during the world cup semi-final match between South Africa and Australia in Kolkata.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly created an iconic moment in the history of cricket when he waved his shirt from the balcony of Lord’s after his team defeated England in a thrilling finale of the NatWest series in 2002.

The moment was, sort of, recreated by a young fan during the second semifinal of the ongoing ODI World Cup between South Africa and Australia in Kolkata.

During Australia’s chase, a kid in the stands was seen waving his shirt in a celebratory gesture just like Ganguly did 21 years ago at the ‘home of cricket’.

The moment was captured on the broadcaster’s camera and caught the attention of the commentators as well. A clip of the emphatic celebration was dropped on Instagram by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“Where have we seen this celebration before?” the caption of the post read.

Fans were quick to flood the comment section of the post with GIFs of Ganguly’s famous celebration.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Delhi Capitals reacted to the post by tagging Ganguly in the comment section.

One user feels that for a cricket fan, this is the perfect way to recognise himself as a resident of Kolkata without mentioning the name of the city.

“Dadagiri style in Kolkata, this kid is going places,” commented another while a user labelled the anonymous kid as “Dada 2.0.”

The NatWest series turned out to be a big assignment for India after they drew a six-match ODI series with England on home soil in January that year.

After the visitors won the last match in Mumbai, Andrew Flintoff took off his jersey and waved it in front of the fans.

A few months later, India flew off to England to play the a tri-series with Sri Lanka as the third team.

Following some enthralling clashes, India and England secured their places in the final. Batting first, the hosts set a target of 326 runs which was considered a formidable total in those days.

In response, Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly gave India a perfect start, stitching a 106-run partnership. However, the middle order faced a massive collapse, with India losing five wickets in 146 runs.

That’s when Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif took over the charge. The duo showed their mettle in front of a full-house at Lord’s and brought India back to the contest with a 121-run stand.

After the Men in Blue finally chased down the target in 49.3 overs, Ganguly went imitated Flintoff’s celebration from the stadium’s balcony.

Speaking about the second World Cup semi-final, Australia edged past South Africa in a low-scoring clash to enter the final for the eighth time in their storied history.

They will face hosts India on November 18 in Ahmedabad.
