At the same time, people often have misunderstandings about consuming refrigerated food, with various myths circulating that suggest potential harm to health. Gastroenterologist Sourabha Sethi has shed light on whether it is safe to eat refrigerated food. He has posted a video on Instagram, exploring the safety of consuming refrigerated food and debunking three myths. Myth 1: Leftover Foods Are Equal to Food Poisoning

One prevailing myth suggests that consuming refrigerated leftovers is akin to consuming the placenta, and therefore, it is unsafe. But this is not true. Leftovers are safe to eat if properly preserved. The key is to refrigerate them within two hours of cooking in an airtight container. This simple practice ensures that the food remains safe for consumption without posing any health risks.

Myth 2: Leftovers Are Forever

Another common belief is that food stored in the fridge can be consumed at any time without repercussions. This notion is far from the truth. Sourabha Sethi advises that refrigerated leftovers should be consumed within 3 to 4 days. Beyond this timeframe, the risk of spoilage increases, potentially leading to foodborne illnesses or allergies. It’s crucial to prioritise food safety over convenience and be mindful of expiration dates.

Myth 3: Reheating Refrigerated Foods:

Some individuals believe that reheating refrigerated foods after a few days eradicates any potential risks. While reheating may eliminate some bacteria, it does not eliminate toxins that might have developed over time. The golden rule remains: consume refrigerated foods within 3 to 4 days to ensure both safety and quality.
