One of the most important festivals in Manipur, Cheiraoba marks the beginning of the new year, as per the regional calendar. This festival is the beginning of the lunar new year and holds immense cultural significance for the people living in the state. The day of Cheiraoba usually falls in the month of April. The Meiteis, the largest ethnic group in the state who follow the indigenous religion Sanamahism, celebrate Cheiraoba on the first day of the lunar calendar. On the other hand, the Vaishnavite Hindus in the state celebrate it on the first day of the solar new year, which coincides with April 13 or April 14 every year. According to RBI, it’s a bank holiday in Imphal.
