28 Years Later: Final Release Date, Plot And Stars Confirmed For The Zombie Thriller
Sony has described the film as a sequel to 28 Days Later, in continuation of the gripping narrative that began with Jim's (Cillian Murphy) waking up to a world ruined by a deadly virus.

The highly anticipated film 28 Years Later has finally received a release date. Announced by Sony on Friday, the movie is set to hit theaters in June next year. Directed by the acclaimed Danny Boyle, known for his work on the original 28 Days Later, this installment is expected to be a thrilling sequel to the franchise that first impressed audiences in 2002. Returning to the director’s chair, Boyle will be working from a script penned by Alex Garland, the mastermind behind the story of 28 Days Later. Joining them in the production are Peter Rice and Bernie Bellew, promising a film that stays true to its roots while offering something new and exciting for fans.

The cast of 28 Years Later boasts an impressive lineup, including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes. While details about the plot remain under wraps, Sony has described the film as a direct sequel to 28 Days Later, suggesting a continuation of the gripping narrative that began with Jim’s (Cillian Murphy) waking up to a world overtaken and ruined by a deadly virus.

The first film of the franchise, 28 Days Later, released in 2002, followed Jim, a bicycle courier who emerges from a coma to find society in ruins due to a contagious and aggression-inducing virus. The film, also starring Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns and Brendan Gleeson, was praised for revitalising the zombie horror genre, leading to a sequel, 28 Weeks Later, in 2007.

28 Weeks Later picked up after the events of the first film, focusing on efforts to establish a safe zone in London. Starring Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Imogen Poots and Idris Elba, among others, the sequel was both a critical and commercial success.

In discussing the project, Garland expressed his enthusiasm for the film, saying, “A few years ago, an idea materialised in my head for what would be a really compelling ’28 Years Later.’ Danny always liked the idea. So, we’re talking about it quite seriously, quite diligently. If he doesn’t want to direct it himself, I’ll be well up for it if we can execute a similarly good idea,” reports Comicbook.

With its release date set for June 20, 2025, 28 Years Later is expected to reignite the excitement and anticipation that fans have had for the franchise, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats.
