Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life created a stir at the box office after its theatrical release earlier this year in March. It was directed by Blessy. Filmed for more than five years under a budget of 82 crore, Aadujeevitham earned approximately Rs 151 crore. The film was based on the novel of the same name written by Benyamin. Apart from Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film also starred KR Gokul, Amala Paul and Shobha Mohan in prominent roles. Aadujeevitham is based on the real-life story of a Malayali immigrant labourer, who was forced into slavery in Saudi Arabia by the native Arabs. The film which was appreciated for its screenplay and heart-wrenching struggle story is now garnering headlines after an actor stated that he regrets working in the film.
Jordanian artist Akef Najem has publicly apologised to Saudi society for his involvement in the film Aadujeevitham following the criticism over his portrayal of a wealthy Arab character. The actor stated that due to the excitement of showing Saudi Arabia in the ‘best possible way’, he didn’t read the script and ended up portraying the negative character.
“I did not read the entire film, but only my role … and it was explained to me about the film and its hero, that he gets lost in the desert for several days until he dies, then a noble Saudi man, who is me, saves him … and this is what prompted me to agree to play the role because it reflects the chivalry and humanity of the Saudis,” wrote Akef Najem in a recent post on Instagram.
He further wrote that he was surprised after watching the film and would have never worked in the Aadujeevitham if he had known that Saudi people were shown in the negative characters in the film.
“I apologise to the brotherly Saudi people with whom we have always been connected by ties of brotherhood, kinship and lineage, leadership and people,” wrote Akef Najem. He further assured that for him the Saudi people will always remain like a family to him.
Aadujeevitham was produced under the banner of Visual Romance. The music was composed by AR Rahman.
