The Karnataka government has banned the release of Annu Kapoor’s film, Hamare Baarah. As reported by the news agency ANI, the film has been banned in the state for two weeks or until further notice.
The state government claimed that the decision had been taken after considering requests from several organizations and after watching the trailer. It further said that the film has been banned to avoid communal tension in the state. The decision is in accordance with the Karnataka Cinema Regulations Act 1964, sections 15(1) and 15(5).
What Is The Controversy Around Hamare Baarah?
Even before its release, Hamare Baarah has been facing a major backlash from viewers. Several people have alleged that there is a glimpse of uncouth crude and communal propaganda in the film’s trailer. Others argued that Hamare Baarah’s trailer is disturbing and can “poison” the minds of an entire generation.
Amidst the raging controversy, the film’s trailer was abruptly pulled down from online platforms, after releasing on May 30.
Annu Kapoor Opens Up On Hamare Baarah Controversy
Recently, Annu Kapoor also slammed those criticising his film. In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, the actor shared that everyone is quick to make judgments on the film even before watching it. He urged people to watch the film first and then make an opinion about it.
“At a personal and an impersonal level, I’m an atheist. My director and producers thought that I was the right person who would be able to implement their vision on celluloid. So, I tried my best to justify my character. I’m not bothered about the rest. Films are a make-believe world where I’m chosen as an artist and my job is to justify my art,” the actor said.
“People talk about propaganda all the time. I’m not bothered about it. I would urge people to watch the film first and then decide what our film stands for. They haven’t watched it, so I don’t understand why they’re judging it,” he added.
Later, in another interview, actor Manoj Joshi, who is also a part of Hamare Baarah, added, “This movie was not made to target any religion. Today, there are discussions about the respect of women in our country. In any society, there should be no disrespect to women. A woman is not an object or a thing; she should be respected, as has been happening in this land of India. Secondly, that film talks about various topics such as education, upbringing, employment, women’s respect and empowerment, and population. So, everyone should watch this film with their families.”
Previously, the CBFC granted Hamare Baarah a U/A certification. They also asked the makers to make 11 changes starting with the title of the film. It was earlier christened Hum Do Hamare Baarah.
