Legally Blonde Prequel To Focus On Elle Woods' High School Life

Reese Witherspoon became a popular face for her role as Elle Woods in the iconic film, Legally Blonde. The actress was first seen as Elle Woods in 2001 and returned for a sequel in 2003. After more than two decades, fans are excitedly anticipating a spinoff from the franchise, which is in the works. Legally Blonde is the first major Amazon MGM film that is being adapted into a Prime Video television series. The producers are preparing for a prequel titled Elle, which is expectedly about the character Elle Woods’ high school years.

As per Deadline, the project is being developed by the film franchise’s star, Reese Witherspoon, under her Hello Sunshine label. Reportedly, the announcement was made at Prime Video’s first upfront presentation. Furthermore, the report details that the television series Elle, created by Laura Kittrell, will follow Elle Woods through high school, revealing the life experiences that formed her into the legendary young woman in the Legally Blonde film. The series takes place years before the events of the first film, which begins as Elle Woods graduates from college and heads to Harvard in pursuit of a legal career.

Speaking about the spinoff, Reese Witherspoon told Deadline, “I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series! Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that?!”

The actress added that she was grateful to the teams at Prime Video and Hello Sunshine, as well as writer Laura Kittrell, for conceptualising this. Shedding some more light on the project, Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios, told the publication, “One of the most quotable, iconic, and beloved characters that is ingrained in the fabric of Hollywood history has to be Elle Woods.” He added that it was an honour to bring back this iconic story.

Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith wrote the first Legally Blonde film, based on Amanda Brown’s novel of the same name, which was released in 2001. It became a cult film, and the actress Reese Witherspoon rose to prominence. In 2003, the sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde was released, followed by the 2009 direct-to-video spinoff Legally Blondes.
