My driver was driving; a false case has been registered against me: Salman Khan on 2002 hit and run case
Special Public Prosecutor Pradeep Gharat told CNN-IBN, "This does not have any evidentiary value. It only gives an opportunity to the accused to explain his case."

Mumbai: Dressed in a white shirt, actor Salman Khan walked inside the Mumbai sessions court to record his statement under Section 313 of CrPC -- a right that every accused has to explain the evidences against him. He answered the questions posed by the sessions court for almost 4 hours. The judge ran the actor through the evidences recorded so far seeking his response -- whether true or false in each situation.

The Bollywood megastar told the court that a false case has been registered against him. The actor maintained that his driver Ashok was driving the car on that fateful day and that he went to the police station but the police did not record his driver's statement. Providing a counter to prosecution's claim, the actor said he did exit from the drivers seat but that was only because the left door was completely jammed. Not just that, the actor claimed the parking assistant of JW Marriott, Kalpesh, who testified before the court saying he had handed over the car keys to the actor, was not even present. Interestingly, the parking assistant's name tag read Yogesh.

Salman also claims he was not drunk on the day of the accident. He also explained why he was seen getting out of the driver's side of the car. In his defence, he said that the left side of the car was jammed which left him with no option but to get out of the driver's side.

Salman has also claimed that chemical analyser Bala Shankar was not an expert and didn't know any procedure. The star also explained the circumstances that led to his car running over people sleeping on the pavement - killing one person and injuring 4 others.

Special Public Prosecutor Pradeep Gharat told CNN-IBN, "This does not have any evidentiary value. It only gives an opportunity to the accused to explain his case."

The hit and run incident dates back to 2002 in which one person had died while four others had been injured. Salman was charged with an additional charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder that is liable for a 10-year sentence. There have been several twists and turns in the 12-year hit and run case in the past too.
