Piyush Mishra, the actor-writer, clarified that he was never officially cast as the main star in Sooraj Barjatya’s romantic film, ‘Maine Pyar Kiya,’ the movie that propelled Salman Khan to fame. Mishra mentioned that he was only “considered” for the role during initial discussions, before any decisions were made. In an interview with The Lallantop last year, Mishra shared that although he was in discussions for the film, nothing came to fruition, leading to Salman ultimately taking on the lead role in the 1989 musical romance drama.
Reflecting on his past statements, Piyush Mishra mentioned in a recent interview that the possibility of being cast in ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ wasn’t a significant event since he had not officially signed on for the film. During a conversation with Zoom, Mishra recalled a time when he was being “considered” for the role back when he was a student at the National School of Drama.
He explained, “But it wasn’t that I had become a star or I had landed that part. It was an early discussion, and I was majorly considered by Sooraj Barjatya’s father. He had come to meet me; he didn’t cast me as such. I was in third year when this had happened. It wasn’t that big a deal at all, I don’t know why it was blown out of proportion, that I was just on the brink of becoming a star but then couldn’t. Arey baba nahi yaar.
He continued, “But it wasn’t that I had become a star or I had landed that part. It was an early discussion, and I was majorly considered by Sooraj Barjatya’s father. Piyush Mishra mentioned that many individuals attempted to goad him into exploiting the situation by asserting that Salman Khan took over his role in the film, a claim he stated was simply incorrect. The multifaceted writer-actor-director expressed his current satisfaction in not landing the opportunity, realizing that he may not have been equipped to handle the sudden fame.
He stated, “They wanted me to claim the role was taken away from me. But that isn’t true. I went on to work a lot after that. If by chance I had landed the opportunity, I would have bagged that big a chance prematurely, at an age when I was perhaps not ready mentally, physically or emotionally. I was a 26-year-old boy then, I could not have handled the success. Mera dimaag ud jaata. I would not have been to handle that kind of stardom, and I accept it. I was not ready for it, so it is good this didn’t happen with me.”
The film ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, starring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree, was a massive hit upon its release and remains one of Bollywood’s most enduring romantic classics. Sooraj Barjatya went on to collaborate with Khan on several other successful projects like ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!,’ ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain,’ and ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’.
