Renowned producer KT Kunjumon and acclaimed director S Shankar have teamed up again to re-release the 1994 film Premikudu, featuring the musical brilliance of AR Rahman and starring Prabhu Deva, Nagma and others.
This re-release is managed by producer Shobha Rani and includes a star-studded cast like SP Balasubramaniam, Vadivelu, Raghuvaran and Girish Karnad, promising an exciting cinematic experience. Premikudu is the Telugu version of the Tamil film Kadhalan.
The recent grand re-release event of Premikudu, which took place on April 28, celebrated the enduring legacy of the film, originally released three decades ago. With over 300 theatres set to screen the movie on May 1 in the Telugu states, excitement is palpable, as evidenced by the enthusiastic response from eager audiences. Director S Shankar’s visionary storytelling, paired with Prabhu Deva’s iconic dance performance and AR Rahman’s timeless melodies, continues to captivate audiences across generations.
The music of the film became popular in several languages, even in the North Indian belt. The song Mukkabla’s dance sequences are marvelled at even to this day and the song was plagiarised freely by tunesmiths. Innovative styles were explored in the soundtrack of the film. For instance, the song Pettai Rap introduced a unique blend of Tamil and English lyrics in a rap-like format, accompanied by synthesisers and keyboards inspired by Tamil folk music.
P Unnikrishnan marked his playback singing debut with the song Ennavale Ennavale, set in the Kedaram raga. The dubbed Hindi version of the soundtrack, titled Humse Hai Muqabala, achieved significant success, selling 2.5 million units in India.
Talking about her comeback to the industry after a hiatus, Shobha Rani said, “Re-release market is lucrative. We already tasted success after re-releasing Kollywood star Suriya’s film ‘Surya S/O of Krishnan’ in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and realised that we can re-release Tamil dubbed movies if the film is a ‘cult’ classic with terrific musical score.” The Telugu audience is now waiting for May 1 to watch the Prabhu Deva classic on the big screen.
