IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack isn’t the first time that a filmmaker has touched upon the December 1999 Kandahar hijack. One of the many movies made that was inspired from the hijack was Kandahar, a 2010 Indian Malayalam-language war film by Major Ravi. The film starred Mohanlal and Amitabh Bachchan in pivotal roles.
The film marked Big B’s Malayalam film industry debut. He played the role of Lokanatha Sharma and it was a cameo. In a blog post at the time, Amitabh Bachchan revealed he did the film for free. He added that Mohanlal visited him personally with the film’s director to offer the role and make the ‘payments’ for his part. However, Amitabh refused to take the fee because he was ‘honoured’ to share the screen with Mohanlal.
“They (Mohanlal and Ravi) had come over to officially sign me on and make payments etc.. Ha..!! Payments ? Fees ? Remuneration ? For a guest appearance of three days ? With Mohanlal who has always had my greatest admiration ? No way !! I don’t charge money for such acts," he wrote on his blog at the time.
“Respectfully declined their offer, gave them some home-made tea, shook hands, embraced and saw them off. It (film) will probably be shot in Ooty, the picturesque and quaint hill station in the beautiful Nilgiri Range of mountains down south," Bachchan said. Besides Mohanlal and Amitabh, the film also featured Ganesh Venkatraman.

Coincidentally, Amitabh wasn’t the only Bachchan family member who starred in a film that was inpired by IC 814 hijack. Abhishek Bachchan’s Zameen was one of the first films that was partially inspired by the Kandahar hijack. The film was released in 2003 and was directed by Rohit Shetty. It was the filmmaker’s first film as well.
Meanwhile, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is directed by Anubhav Sinha. The series stars Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza and Arvind Swamy.
