AR Rahman bagged the Oscars for the song Jai Ho, which was sung by Sukhwinder Singh.

AR Rahman needs no special introduction. He is one of the most celebrated music composers globally and there’s no question about that. The musical maestro, who continues to get recognition on both domestic and international stage, boasts an amazing list of awards including two Oscars and two Grammys. Did you know that there was a time when AR Rahman had to apologise to singer Sukhwinder Singh for the song Jai Ho? The 2008 acclaimed film Slumdog Millionaire’s song Jai Ho garnered much appreciation from audiences, not just in India but abroad too. Composed by AR Rahman, the timeless classic was penned by the legendary writer Gulzar and Tanvi Shah and sung by Sukhwinder Singh, Tanvi, Mahalakshmi Iyer, Vijay Prakash and Rahman himself.

For the track, AR Rahman bagged the Oscars in the Best Music Director category. During the award-receiving ceremony, the composer thanked many people by their names and gave them credit but forgot to take the name of singer Sukhwinder Singh in his speech. Many years after the incident, AR Rahman apologised to the singer during an interview. He said that while receiving the award, so much was going on in his mind that he forgot to take his name.

Apart from the Oscar, the song also received the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Motion Picture in 2010. AR Rahman and Sukhwinder Singh have also collaborated on the iconic track Chaiyya Chaiyya from Mani Ratnam’s 1998 romantic drama film Dil Se, featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora.

Earlier, AR Rahman revealed that he declined to meet the pop sensation Michael Jackson after the late singer did not respond to his email for a week. He shared that after being nominated for an Oscar, he received a response that Michael wanted to see him. The composer denied the invitation and stated that he would only meet him after winning the Oscar.

“I was sure I was going to win. I won and the next day, I went to meet him. It was almost 6:30 pm, and the sun was going down. And then, somebody opened the door with gloves on,” said AR Rahman in an interview.

Other iconic compositions by AR Rahman include Chhoti Si Aasha, Ishq Bina, Rang De Basanti, Tere Bina and Jashn-E-Bahaara.
