Uday Kiran made his acting debut with the Telugu-language romantic comedy film Chitram. He featured screen Reema Sen. The film was a sensational hit in 2000. It was produced by Ramoji Rao. RP Patnaik composed the music for the film. It was released in Tamil as Chithiram in 2001, with most of the sequences dubbed from the original. Later, the film was remade in Kannada as Chitra and was a blockbuster. The film ran for 100 days in 12 centres.
As per reports, Chitram was a huge box office success and became one of the highest grossers of that year. The film was made on a budget of Rs 30 lakh. Promotions and publicity expenses cost another 10 lakh. The movie was released in theatres and did a total business of Rs 42 crore. Along with this, at that time, Uday Kiran took a remuneration of just Rs 11,000 for this film.
After this movie, Uday Kiran again worked with director Teja on his second film, Nuvvu Nenu. It starred Uday Kiran and Anita, with Sunil, Banerjee, Tanikella Bharani, Dharmavarapu Subramanyam, and Telangana Shakuntala in supporting parts. This is the official debut film of Anita Hassanandani. The movie was released on August 10, 2001, and was a huge commercial success. It won four Filmfare Awards South, including Best Film — Telugu, and five Nandi Awards in various categories.
After this, Uday Kiran appeared in Manasantha Nuvve. This romantic drama film was directed by VN Aditya. The film was released on October 19, 2001, and was a success like Chitram and Nuvvu Nenu. It was one among super hit Telugu films in 2001.
