Indian agencies are exploring the possible reasons behind the sudden aggression from Pakistan, including cross-border firing in which a BSF jawan was killed, stand-alone, targeted attacks and a massive push for infiltration.

A top-level meeting was held to analyse and prepare for the situation at the India-Pakistan border where officials from central agencies and the forces discussed the possibilities of attacks by terror outfits backed by Pakistan’s forces.

Various inputs from the Multi Agency Centre (MAC) have been collaborated with the information gathered by other forces.

Top sources claimed that it is suspected that Pakistan is trying to push bunches of foreign terrorists through the border in J&K along with sophisticated weapons. Sources also said that J&K was asked to level up preparations for the winter during a meeting held last week.

“The big issue is to address the cross-border firing which may be due to fencing work but considering Pakistan’s past record, the targeted firing on a BSF jawan is alarming. It is expected that Pakistan-based terrorists are preparing something against J&K,” a top government official told News18.

The top officials have been asked to conduct regular threat assessments and keep a check on troop readiness apart from taking security briefings from ground commanders.

Changed winter strategy

There has been a change in strategy for winters, especially after the BSF jawan was killed by Pakistan Rangers. Sources said this had come after dedicated attacks in jungle areas and attacks on migrants and a cop.

The security grid is busy realigning the strategy, and ground commanders will soon be briefed about the new plan of action, another top-level official posted in J&K said.

Drones are the biggest threat in winters due to minimum visibility and Indian agencies suspect that terror outfits may push consignments of weapons through drones.

Border Skirmishes

A Border Security Force head constable was killed last Thursday in firing by Pakistan Rangers along the International Border in Ramgarh sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district. The jawan suffered a bullet injury and succumbed to injuries during treatment.

Top-level sources confirmed that the incident has triggered high alert across border areas and other forces have also raised alert post the ceasefire violation.

This is the third such incident at the International Border in as many weeks.

On October 28, Pakistan Rangers opened unprovoked heavy firing and shelling, which lasted around seven hours. During the firing, two BSF jawans and a civilian were injured. Similarly, on October 17, two BSF personnel suffered injuries in unprovoked firing by the Rangers in Arnia sector.

Meanwhile, within 48 hours, terrorists targeted a labourer in Pulwama who later succumbed to his injuries. Also, Masroor Ahmad Wani, a J&K police inspector, was shot at by a Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist when the off-duty cop was playing cricket at the Eidgah playground.
