With uncertainty over the T20I future of two of India’s finest white-ball cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continuing, fast bowling legend Wasim Akram feels that the team would do well to include both the batters in their squad for the next year’s world cup.
There’s no official word from BCCI or selectors confirming if either Rohit or Kohli no longer feature in their T20I plans.
India selectors have fielded youngsters in T20Is since the conclusion of world cup last year when they made a semi-final exit, suffering a 10-wicket defeat to eventual champions England.
Hardik Pandya has been leading the T20I side in the absence of Rohit.
However, following Rohit and Kohli’s phenomenal show in the ODI World Cup, several former players are suggesting that the duo should be part of India’s T20 plans.
Akram feels India will need the experience of their two senior stars and they cannot just rely on youngsters.
“T20 World Cup is just a few months away. I will pick both. They will be the main players for India, no doubt about it. You need a little bit of experience in T20. You cannot solely rely on young guy,” the former Pakistan captain said on Sportskeeda.
Rohit has played the most T20Is in history having played 148 matches so far while Kohli is the second-most experienced India T20I cricketer.
Rohit has been part of all eight editions of the Men’s T20I World Cup and was part of the India squad that won the competition in 2007.
India batting legend Gautam Gambhir thinks that Rohit should be part of the world cup and not just as a specialist batter.
“They (Rohit and Kohli) both need to get picked, both should be picked and more importantly, I want to see Rohit Sharma as captain in the T20 World Cup,” Gambhir said.
The 2024 T20 World Cup will be co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA.
