Uttar Pradesh has successfully implemented a network of 100,000 Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras as part of the Smart City Mission. The initiative, spearheaded by the Urban Development Department in collaboration with the Home Department, focuses particularly on safety of women, children and the elderly.

The effort is part of enhancing the overall infrastructure and security apparatus of the state. As per the state government, all 100,000 CCTV cameras have been strategically installed across 17 municipal corporations and Gautam Buddha Nagar and integrated into the comprehensive Safe City Project. This deployment will ensure round-the-clock surveillance, providing a robust security net for the citizens of Uttar Pradesh.

As per the government, the implementation of this extensive CCTV network not only acts as a deterrent to potential criminal activities, but also provides a sense of security for women, children and the elderly.

Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department, emphasized the significance of the Safe City project within the broader framework of the Smart City Mission. He stated that beyond the infrastructural improvements, the initiative is a testament to the state’s commitment to safeguarding its residents. He also expressed confidence that the Safe City project would play a pivotal role in establishing Uttar Pradesh as the safest state in the country.

The heart of this security network lies in the Smart City’s Integrated Command and Control Center and Integrated Traffic Management System. All 100,000 cameras are centrally monitored, enabling real-time responses to incidents. It was said that this centralised approach enhances the efficiency of the security systems across cities, ensuring swift action and improved overall safety.

The timing of this initiative takes on particular importance with the recent influx of thousands of devotees to Ayodhya following the historic Pran Pratishtha ceremony on January 22. It was stated that the Safe City project has been instrumental in guaranteeing a secure and pleasant experience for these devotees, demonstrating a broader commitment to the safety and well-being of citizens throughout the state.
