Move Over Six Sixes, Australian Cricketer Gareth Morgan Picks Six Wickets in an Over to Steal Spectacular Win
Gareth Morgan picked up six wickets in a over to help Mudgeeraba pulled off a miraculous win over Surfers Paradise in a Tier-3 Australian cricket match.

Australian cricketer Gareth Morgan made the headlines after achieving a unique feat in a Tier-3 cricket match. In that game, Morgan’s side Mudgeeraba looked to make a comeback against Surfers Paradise after a poor showing in their batting performance.

The Surfers looked strong in the second half and needed just five runs in the final over to win the match. They had six wickets remaining as everything looked to be over for Mudgeeraba. However, that is when Gareth stepped up for his side, delivering six scalps in six balls to finish the match in a victory for his side. One cricket page talked about the feat on X saying, “Imagine the chaos in the sheds! Gareth Morgan took six-in-six for Mudgeeraba to claim one of the most unlikely victories OF ALL TIME”.

Mudgeeraba faced Surfers Paradise in an ODI game of the Cricket Gold Coast Senior Competition, Summer 2023/24. The match took place on November 11 at the Carrara Community Centre/Corbwood No 2.

Mudgeeraba were batting first and were halted to a measly 178 runs for 10 wickets in the innings. Surfers Paradise were looking en route to a comfortable victory. They had managed to hold their wickets together with Jake Garland leading the side with a 65-run knock in only 60 balls. The Surfers were able to accumulate 174 runs in the second half with one over left while losing only four wickets.

In the final over, Gareth Morgan dismissed Jake Garland as he got caught out while trying to finish the game for his side. In the next two balls, he scalped Connor Matheson and Surfers’ skipper Michael Curtin who were both caught on the leg side. This secured a hat trick for the Aussie bowler. In the remaining three balls Gareth took the wickets of Wade McDougall, Riley Eckersley and Brodie Phelan to complete a double-hattrick and secure his sixth wicket of the over.

The match flow was full of panic as incoming batters scrambled to get on their pads and batting gloves on time. Surprisingly, no one was timed out like Angelo Mathews during Sri Lanka’s game against Bangladesh in the ongoing 2023 World Cup. Morgan later revealed that one of his younger teammates did raise the concern but their team simply did not want to follow Bangladesh’s example.

The most wickets taken in a single over of professional cricket is five which has occurred on three occasions. The first was when New Zealand’s Neil Wagner achieved the feat in 2011 while playing for Otago. The second time it was Al-Amin Hossian for Bangladesh Cricket Board XI in 2013 while India’s Abhimanyu Mithun did it for Karnataka in 2019. Now, it seems like all those records have been outdone by Gareth Morgan’s six-ball miracle on Saturday.
