Phone Call From PM Modi, Shift To AYUSH Medicines: CJI After Holistic Wellness Centre's Launch

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Thursday launched the AYUSH Holistic Wellness Centre at the Supreme Court premises in New Delhi. At the launch, he spoke about his lifestyle, battle with Covid-19 and a phone call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Present at the launch with the CJI was Union Minister of AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal and other officials from the department.

CJI Chandrachud spoke about the importance of maintaing a healthy lifestyle and spoke about his personal experience while being associated with AYUSH – Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy.

“I have been associated with AYUSH since Covid broke out. The prime minister called me up and said, ‘I believe that you are down with Covid and I hope everything is fine. I realise that you are not in good shape but we’ll do everything. There is a vaidya who is also a secretary at AYUSH and I’ll arrange a call with him, he’ll send you medicine and all,'” CJI was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

The CJI mentioned that when he was down with Covid, he took medicines from Covid. “The second and third time when I had Covid, I didn’t take any allopathic medicine at all,” he said while expressing his belief in alternative holistic treatments.

“I underwent Panchakarma about a year ago, and I am looking forward to doing it again now, as it is the turn of the season. However, we have over 2,000 staff members in the Supreme Court, including our colleagues, all 34 judges who bear tremendous stress in their daily work, leading to a heavy workload of files,” CJI Chandrachud noted.

A holistic lifestyle is important, not just for the judges and their immediate families, but also for the staff members, the CJI told news agency ANI, adding that, “Through them, we can propagate this message for the rest of the country”.

He said that he is “deeply grateful” to all the doctors and AYUSH. He said that its facility, unveiled at the top court, is being opened up to the entire nation.

The CJI also spoke about the practices he undertakes to take care of his health and wellness. “I practice yoga. I woke up at 3:30 this morning to do yoga. Additionally, I have been following a vegan diet for the last five months. I am trying to focus on a holistic pattern life, which begins with what you eat, of course and, what you put into your system,” he said.
