Oberoi Hotels’ patriarch Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi passed away on November 14 morning, leaving behind a legacy of impeccable hospitality.
The former executive chairman of EIH Limited, The Oberoi Group flagship, is known as the man who changed the face of the hotels business in India. “In addition to providing leadership for the management of luxury hotels in several countries, Oberoi has been instrumental in pioneering the development of Oberoi Hotels and Resorts. The Oberoi brand has come to represent fine luxury hotels,” reads the Oberoi Group website.
In 2002, he took over as the chairman of EIH Limited after the death of his father and founding chairman of the Oberoi Group Mohan Singh Oberoi. He remained the CEO of EIH Limited till 2013. Oberoi was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2008 for his exceptional service to the country.
He was educated in India, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.
Oberoi is credited with placing Oberoi hotels on the international luxury travellers map with the opening of several luxury hotels in important cities.
He established The Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development at New Delhi in 1967.
