Rajnath Singh has said Advani will be natural candidate of the BJP for PM's post 'after' Vajpayee

New Delhi: After Atal Behari Vajpayee, who would be BJP's prime ministerial candidate? While LK Advani was mentioned as the most potential candidate, still there were doubts if the party will actually stick to the seniority rule.

BJP chief Rajnath Singh on Tuesday set at rest all speculation, saying Advani, who was his predecessor as the party chief, would naturally be the party's candidate for the prime minister's post 'after' Vajpayee as he has ruled himself out of the race for the top job.

"Why after Atal...? It will be only Advani after Atal. He will be the natural choice. Only he should become the prime minister," Rajnath Singh said in an interview to a news channel. "This is the law of nature, which Rajnath cannot fight with," he said.

The BJP chief, however, non-committal when he was asked if the BJP would prefer a second term for President APJ Abdul Kalam.

In fact, he parried a question regarding the party's choice for the post of next President. "Let the elections in Uttar Pradesh get over first. A meeting of the party's parliamentary board will be called (to decide on the matter)," he said.

Asked about his comments on the fake encounter case of Gujarat, Rajnath said he believed the state government would do no wrong. Rajnath also praised Chief Minister Narendra Modi for developing Gujarat as a 'model' state.
