Anna's MMRDA fast well-handled by govt: Chavan
Municipal Corporation elections are slated to be held early next month followed by the 27 Zilla Parishad elections.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Monday said the agitation led by anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare in the city was "well handled" by the state government.

Addressing a meeting of the District Congress Committee (DCC) chiefs and office bearers to discuss the upcoming Zilla Parishad and Municipal Corporation elections, Chavan said, "Hazare's fast at MMRDA grounds was well handled. But the Lokpal issue is not a closed chapter and the state Congress has to be geared up to answer all allegations and charges against the party."

The positive aspect of the just concluded municipal council polls was that the communal forces had been defeated, he said.

Asserting that the Congress had emerged as the single largest party in 195 municipal councils, he admitted that NCP remains the main competitor of Congress in the state.

Chavan said the 12th standard examinations will not be postponed due to the Zilla Parishad and Municipal Corporation elections.

The state education department has opposed such a move, he said adding that the government may face backlash from parents if examinations are postponed and the matter could go to courts as well.

Municipal Corporation elections are slated to be held early next month followed by the 27 Zilla Parishad elections.
