New Delhi: Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Friday blamed the Opposition for exploiting the Lokpal issue for gains in the forthcoming state elections.
"It was the obstructive, dilatory, politically expedient, opportunistic conduct by BJP. BJP leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha categorically said in her speech that she wanted the matter to be referred to select committee, why? BJP wanted to exploit the issue in the forthcoming elections. It wanted to keep the pot boiling," Singhvi said.
"Every possible trick was used to prevent the bill from being passed in Lok Sabha. It shows the intent of UPA government in Lok Sabha to pass the bill, many amendments, changes were made. We were flexible, we reached out beyond the limit," he added.
Making his party's stand clear on what happened in Rajya Sabha, he said, "187 amendments were moved by the BJP and other parties. How is it possible in the last day of session notified by President, even 50 of this 187 amendments."
He said that the BJP said in the Standing Committee that they were for Constitutional status.
"BJP and several Left parties go to Jantar Mantar to get claps and score brownie points. It is for the BJP to decide, as it has been showing a double face, hypocritical face on the issue. They are trying to get over the problem by putting conditionalities," he said.
"Assassins are blaming the victims. BJP is the true murderers of the democracy and Lokpal Bill," he said.
