New Delhi: The Congress leadership on Friday discussed the Telangana issue amid mounting speculation that the party may be veering round towards creation of a separate state.

But a final call will be taken by the party's highest decision-making body the Working Committee, party sources said after Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other top leaders met to discuss the issue. A decision on the issue is likely to come before August 5 when the Monsoon Session begins.

The Congress Core Group meeting, comprising top leaders, came on a day of hectic consultations by party leaders with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kirankumar Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha and PCC Chief Botsa Satyanarayana.

"The consultation process is over. Now await for the decision of the party as well as UPA government," AICC General Secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh, Digvijay Singh, told reporters after the Core Group meeting which was also attended by union ministers A K Antony, P Chidambaram, Sushilkumar Shinde and Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Earlier, Digvijay Singh held three-hour long discussions with various leaders of Andhra Pradesh, including the Chief Minister. Sources said that in their separate meetings, the Chief Minister, state Congress chief and the deputy Chief Minister have made detailed presentations to Digvijay Singh.
