Finance Minister Arun Jaitley reiterated on Wednesday that the Centre is committed to pass the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill in Parliament. Accusing the Congress of merely opposing the bill for political reasons, Jaitley asked the party for its support.
"If you look at the history of the bill, I have said that Congress should have legitimately claimed the original authorship. But for this 1% additional tax on inter-state movement, my bill is identical to what Congress had introduced. Every political party except the Congress is openly supporting this. It is for the Congress to really introspect," the Finance Minister said.
Jaitley said he would want the opposition party to give its all-clear. If it doesn’t come through, then he is willing to let Parliament do its job.
“Enough is enough as far as GST proceedings go. I will try till the last minute to convince them," he said.
Jaitley has been exuding confidence of getting the GST Bill passed in the upcoming monsoon session. He has maintained that regional parties, including UPA allies like DMK and NCP, are all making strong noises in support of the tax legislation.
The GST Bill, which has been approved by the Lok Sabha, is pending in the Rajya Sabha because of stiff resistance by the Congress, the largest party in the House, over a few proposals.
